It's no fun to finish things you start, is it? It's even worse having to finish things other people start. Like the Iraq invasion. How are we going to end something with no end in sight?
Everybody wants to be the lead singer. The first violin concert master. What Rudyard Kipling called 'the gallant figure in a blood-stained scarf, staunchly waving his men onward....only some of us are the poor devils who get waved onward."
I didn't feel like doing this tonight. I would rather be starting something new and fun, like a Halloween costume for the party tomorrow, or my novel for NaNoWriMo.
But I think I'm not even equipped to be one of the leaders or the soldiers. I would be one of the urchins blowing the piccolo and beating the drums, the 'boys of the fore and aft' that hopefully try to bring out the best in the troops and call them back to end something with honor.
I sent one last email to the Mississippi National Guard Family Relief Fund and advised them that we are willing to donate our funds to any family in need whose active duty member was called away during Katrina.
But I won't do anything until you all have a chance to check it out.
